Discovery Task 3: Finding Books Using ANTPAC

HINT: Read the entire assignment before you start the assignment. You will need to print a copy of the assignment to turn in to your section leader.

ASSIGNMENT:
The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to the UC Irvine Libraries ANTPAC catalog. You will use ANTPAC, UCI Libraries' local on-line catalog, to locate references to three books on three different topics in the UCI Libraries. You will record the information available from ANTPAC (the bibliographic and location information) for all three books but you will only locate one book in the library. The topics are listed below:

TOPICS:
  • Locate an ANTPAC catalog entry for a book on Asian American Literature.
  • Locate an ANTPAC catalog entry for a book about translating.
  • Locate a book on the topic of immigration.

OVERVIEW OF ANTPAC:

ANTPAC is UCI’s local on-line catalog. By using it, you can find out what books and other materials UCI has and where they are located. ANTPAC also indicates whether a book is checked out and when it is due back.

OBJECTIVES:
  • Learn to use UC Irvine's ANTPAC catalog to locate books on a subject.
  • Learn the difference between a keyword search and a subject search
  • Learn to interpret the bibliographic, content and location information in the ANTPAC catalog record.
  • Learn to use the information in the ANTPAC catalog record to evaluate the relevance of the book to your topic.
  • Learn to write the bibliographic information about the book in MLA (Modern Language Association of America) format.

KEYWORD VS. SUBJECT SEARCHES

  • A keyword search looks for the word(s) you enter in any field as a phrase in the ANTPAC record.
  • A subject search looks for the word(s) you enter as a phrase in the subject heading field of the ANTPAC record.

WHAT TO DO TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT:

1. Use the ANTPAC catalog to find the information available from the catalog for books on:

  • Asian American Literature
  • Immigration***

2. Print the full ANTPAC record for each book you select and label each part. A detailed explanation of an ANTPAC record is on page 3 of this worksheet. Fill out the information requested on the form that appears on page 4 of this worksheet.

3. ***Locate the book on immigration and make a copy of the title page. In order to avoid every person in the Humanities Core Course looking for the same book on immigration, you will locate a book written during a particular year based on the first letter of your section leader's last name. See page 5 of this assignment to determine what year you will look for.

4. Write a description of the process you used to locate the book on your topic in your journal. Tell why you selected the books you did. Tell what clues you used to decide that they were good choices.

5. Write the bibliographic citation for each book in MLA (Modern Language Association of America) format.

6. Attach the labeled ANTPAC records, the completed worksheet forms, the photocopy of the title page of the book on immigration and the bibliographic citations you wrote to your worksheet and turn it in to your section leader.

HELP!

What to do if you need extra help:
Libraries can seem confusing and intimidating at first, but they are designed for use by students like you. This assignment introduces you to some basic library skills that will help you be a successful student at UCI. Read the assignment and worksheet carefully. Make every effort to understand what you are supposed to do before you start working on the assignment.

1. Try to complete the assignment independently.
2. If you feel confused, see if you can find a partner who is more familiar or feels more confident about using the library.
3. If you have questions about the library assignment in general, or about specific steps in the library assignment, there are people and services available to assist you. One good option is to send a query to Ask A Librarian (http://www.lib.uci.edu/services/ask/ask.html), the UC Irvine Libraries electronic reference service.
4. Ask your instructor for help.
5. If you still need help, ask at the Reference Desk in the Main Library. The Reference Desk is located on the first floor of the Main Library (downstairs from the building entrance level). The people at the Loan Desk and in the Current Periodicals Room will try to answer your questions but they are not experts. The Librarians at the Reference Desk are the most familiar with the help you will need.
